Borrowed precision¶
Between recognition and perspective there is a person, and Weinberg puts them there on purpose: a system is a boundary somebody drew, a model is something somebody holds, an error is a gap turning up in the work. Remove the person and none of the three has anywhere to live.
That position is the hinge, and it has a width. Ashby gives the width a name: variety, the number of distinguishable elements in a set. His own example makes the count personal. A two-armed semaphore offers sixty-four positions to an observer close enough to distinguish the arms, and thirty-six to one who is not. Same semaphore, different width.
Almost none of those distinctions get worked out from scratch. They are picked up, and they arrive with a vocabulary attached. Borrowing is how a hinge gets stocked, and imports do not all do the same thing on arrival.
Three cases, and they come out three different ways.
The qualifier dropped in transit¶
Ashby’s law of requisite variety says that the responses available to whoever is holding a situation steady have to cover the kinds of thing that can push it off course, and only ever relative to what has to stay inside limits. It travels as “a control system has to be at least as complex and capable as the system it governs”. That is a different claim. It swaps the size of the governed thing for the variety of what arrives, and drops the limits entirely.
The word survived the crossing. The qualifier did not, and the qualifier was the part with consequences. “Match the estate” is an unbounded demand. “Match what arrives, relative to what has to stay inside limits” is a bounded one, and it admits attenuation as well as amplification. The folk version is not a simplification of Ashby. It is an argument for a larger budget wearing his name.
At the hinge, that import is worse than none. A term arrives carrying authority, the discriminating part stays behind, and the slot fills with something that feels like a distinction and does not cut.
The word that reaches nothing new¶
A hidden attractor is precise: its basin of attraction does not intersect any neighbourhood of an equilibrium, so inspecting a system’s rest points will not reveal it. In a system with no equilibria at all, every attractor is hidden. Chengwei Dong and Jiahui Wang built a four-dimensional system in 2022 that has no equilibrium at all, except at a single value of one constant. At one setting of its parameters, three such attractors coexist in it, selected by nothing but where the trajectory started.
Read across to an organisation, that lands: the behaviour no org chart accounts for, two teams running the same process to opposite ends. Nothing about the reading is wrong.
It is also not new. The law of medium numbers already has a security estate producing large irregular surprises on schedule, and shadow architectures already name the distance between the official structure and where the work settles. Neither needs a four-dimensional system to say so.
The tell is that nothing about the reading could come out otherwise. No count changes, no threshold gets crossed, nobody is any more wrong on Tuesday than they were on Monday. The hinge keeps the width it had and acquires a second name for it. A better word travels further, so that is worth having. It is not a finding.
The word that brings a number¶
Cassini ovals are the points whose distances to two fixed foci multiply to a constant. Set the foci at \(\pm a\) and the constant at \(b^2\), and the whole family turns on one ratio, \(b/a\). Below 1, two separate loops, one around each focus. At exactly 1, the figure eight that touches itself between them. Between 1 and \(\sqrt 2\), a single waisted curve around both. At \(\sqrt 2\) and above, a plain convex oval.
Only the first of those thresholds is a structural event. Below it the curve is in two pieces, above it in one. The second changes the shape without changing what is joined to what. That makes it the wrong one to borrow and the easier one to gesture at.
The first is what the attractor reading lacked: a parameter, a value it crosses, and a connectivity that changes when it does, with nothing else about the construction touched. Read across: a small change in one condition can alter which states a system can settle into. The chart is unchanged. Where the work settles is not.
The price of saying so is three answers. What the two foci are, what moves the ratio, and which of the two thresholds is being claimed. Answer them and there is a parameter, a threshold and a changed set of resting states: a claim that can be checked, and one that can come out wrong. Decline them and what is left is “organisations have hidden attractors”, the vocabulary without the mathematics.
This one widens the hinge, and it widens it because it can be got wrong. Before the threshold, two situations looked alike. After it, one sits below and one above, and a reading can be mistaken about which. That is a distinction where there was none.
The dividing line¶
The mathematics is sound in all three cases, and nobody borrowed in bad faith. Borrowing is how vocabulary spreads, and a field with no imports goes stale.
Two questions separate them, and they come in that order. Whether the import reaches anything the existing account did not, and then, if it does, whether it still carries something that could turn out false.
Hidden attractors stop at the first. The reading is sound, the ground was already held, and the hinge acquires a second name for a width it had. The Cassini family clears both, on the condition that the three obligations are met. Ashby’s law never reaches either question, because what arrived is not what was borrowed.
Mathematics has one further attraction, and it is the one that does the damage. A field with equations in it looks like a place where behaviour follows from structure, so a hinge stocked from there seems to offer a hinge with nobody standing in it. Design the field and the outcomes follow.
None of the three delivers that. Ashby’s variety is observer-relative by his own statement, so the count depends on who is doing the distinguishing. The attractor reading needs somebody to decide what counts as a behaviour before anything can be said to settle anywhere. The Cassini threshold needs somebody to say what the two foci are. Each of them puts a person back at precisely the point the borrowing appeared to remove one.
The hinge does not get designed away. It gets stocked well or badly, and the stocking is the work.
